IEC is a trade association that has been providing electrical training for over 40 years to more than 3,000 member contractors nationwide. Over 16,000 individuals are currently enrolled in our national training programs, offered at more than 50 training centers across the U.S. In the Kentuckiana area, approximately 350 students are enrolled in our Apprenticeship Programs.

Our 4-Year Apprentice Program delivers comprehensive, hands-on training in the electrical trade, designed to prepare you for a successful and rewarding career.

Throughout the program, apprentices receive in-depth instruction in:

  • Electrical systems and components
  • Industry-standard safety protocols
  • Advanced installation and troubleshooting techniques

This program blends classroom learning with on-the-job training provided by an IEC member contractor who sponsors the apprentice. This ensures apprentices not only understand the theory but also build the real-world skills needed on the job site.

By graduation, apprentices are fully prepared with the knowledge, experience, and certifications required to advance as journeymen electricians in the electrical construction industry.


The IEC Electrical Apprenticeship Program is a fully accredited program by the U.S. Department of Labor and the Kentucky Apprenticeship Council.

Approved by the U.S. Veterans Administration

Credit Hours

  • Apprentices earn 51 applicable credit hours toward an Associate Degree through Jefferson Community and Technical College.

Curriculum

  • The program includes classroom instruction in:
  • The National Electrical Code (NEC)
  • Electrical Theory
  • Real-World Problem Solving and application-based scenarios

Employment Requirement

  • Year 1 – The IEC of Kentuckiana will assist you in your job search for employment with an IEC Contractor.
  • Years 2 through 4 of Apprenticeship school – All apprentices must be full-time employees of an IEC member contractor, who serves as their Apprenticeship Sponsor.

Class Schedule

  • Apprentices attend class:
    • one night per week for 39 weeks, from August through May (standard program), or
    • two nights per week for 19 weeks from January through May (Midyear program).

Instruction Hours

  • Each apprentice receives a minimum of 144 hours of instruction per year, over the course of 4 years.

Graduation

  • Upon completion, apprentices graduate as fully trained Electricians. Many are also prepared to take the Master Electrician Exam and pursue their Master Electrician License.

New to the trade? This is a 1-day, 7-hour program that serves as a fast-track into the Electrical Industry by providing valuable training to help potential apprentices start their careers off strong with an overview of the trade, safety, hands on- activities as well as resume and interview coaching!

ACADEMICS:

Class Attendance

  • Regular attendance is essential for success in the program. Apprentices must complete the state-mandated minimum of 144 classroom hours each year. If an apprentice’s absences make it impossible to meet the 144-hour requirement, they will be required to repeat the school year or will be dismissed from the program.

Academic Performance

  • A minimum average of 70% must be maintained each year to advance to the next level of training/next year’s class.
  • Commitment in the classroom is just as important as performance on the job site — both are key to becoming a successful electrician.
